HSM Breakup

HSM (High School Ministry) Breakup

This Sunday night, after the PM service, all students in years 8 - 10 are invited to the DeRuysscher's place (437 West Mt Cotton Rd, Mt Cotton) for a BBQ and pool party breakup. We'd also like to extend this invitation to this year's Grade 7s, who we look forward to sharing HSM with in 2008!

Students will be able to travel to DeRuysscher's with HSM leaders, but will need to be collected by parents at 9:30pm.

We hope you can come and enjoy this night of fun and celebration with us! Dinner provided, don't forget your togs!

9am: Why is it that we can talk about the weather, sport, politics, holidays, with ease, to almost any
one, but when it comes to sharing our faith, we become shy, tongue tied and uncertain? Perhaps
its because we have made bearing witness to Jesus way more difficult than it needs to be. When
the early church, empowered by the Holy Spirit, spoke on the day of Pentecost, it was a simply
explaination of one thing, and one thing alone - Jesus.

We will also celebrate the Lords Supper during this service

5pm: Dan Kroon will lead the message and the Kids @ Nite will present what they have been learning this term.

Christmas Carols Flyer Distribution

This coming Sunday we will be organising the distribution of 5000 Flyers to the local community advertising the Christmas Carols Event on the 16th December. Distribution maps and flyers will be handed to families after the Sunday service's for delivery next week. Please put some time aside in the coming week (Approximately 1 hour) so your family can do your part in the distribution of these flyers.

"After visiting Clinton, Tracy and children recently we wish to thank the congregation sincerely for the love, care and compassion shown to them during this time and for all the prayers made on their behalf.  It has been a humbling experience to see the many ways help has been given, too many to mention.

We believe God is using the diet and medicines to keep Clinton well and we continue to pray for healing.  Living so far away makes it difficult but it's a comfort to know that he is being well looked after.

 Each time I stepped out of Tracy and Clinton's front door it struck me; the visual reminders of love in the form of trays of wheatgrass on the patio. Thousands of grains of wheat sprouted ready for juicing.

There are other indicators...lots of them....daily; cards stacked in the tray on the counter, prayers lifted to our gracious Father, the tantalising aromas of meals delivered to the door, medical people giving their time and expertise, generosity plus, emails etc.

All these and more reflect and remind me of God's love shown to a family in need of support. All this and more, shown by God's people, the church.

Bart and I are so thankful and grateful for that support to this family we hold so very dear. It makes a huge difference to know they are cared for in this way.

Our visits to Redlands CRC services are made special by the welcome we receive and the worship service itself.

9am: Being filled with the Holy Spirit. Find hope/strength/encouragement in your daily Christian walk. Spring-boarding from Paul's admission of times in his personal life of doing what he doesn't want-not doing what he wants (Rom.7:15-25), rest in God's grace (Is.55:1; Jn.4:14; 7:37-38).

5pm: How do you change our world? What different can we really make? If it's true that society has lost its moral fibre, can we ever get it back? Paul says the Gospel has an impact on homes, families and the workplace - but do these things really help us today? Can we apply them in 2007? Or does our society, the quality of relationships, and the state of families today offer us a better solution? Read ahead at Col 3:18 - 4:1

Next week...

From Monday Dave will be in Sydney for a few days. He will be undertaking training through Ministry Advantage. The focus of this is to gain greater competency in leader development. Dave will be part of a national program starting in 2008 to assist pastors in the development of their mission and ministry. The Elders believe this will have some significant flow on at Redlands and for Dave personally.

Dave & Leonie will also be away from Friday to Sunday enjoying a bit of time out.

Schoolies Teams update

For those who are still awake at 10:30pm Sunday night, we've had a few news updates from the  Schoolies teams...

• Gold Coast: There has been a rough night or two, but some significant commitments have been made by some of the kids from schools in our local area. Pray for strength, grace and faith in Jesus to take root
• From Great Keppel Island: Many kids have been keen to chat about God - pray that this hunger will be nourished
• Give thanks for dedicated (and now, very tired) chaplain teams from RCRC and beyond. Pray that the Gospel will bear fruit in these young lives.

9am: Our focus will be on the 5th petition of the Lord's Prayer: Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors (Matthew 6:12)
Here's how the Heidelberg Catechism (1563) explained the meaning of this prayer:
"Because of Christ's blood, do not hold against us, poor sinners that we are, any of the sins we do or the evil that constantly clings to us.
Forgive us just as we are fully determined, as evidence of Your grace in us, to forgive our neighbours."

5pm: As an outsider looking in, Jesus returning to heaven is just a crazy idea. I mean, you want a movement that will change the world, and then the leader goes away and leaves it in the hands of the a rag tag bunch of disciples who have stumbled and spluttered their way through three years with Jesus. It's just a crazy way to go about it. Except that Acts chapter 2 happens - and all of a sudden mission impossible, becomes mission possible as Jesus pours out his Holy Spirit on the church.

Schoolies this Week

Please remember the thousands of year 12 students who are at schoolies this week. We know they all want to celebrate, but these weeks are often witness to some of the most disturbing events. Please pray for safety for all these young people. Please especially remember the Red Frog chaplains, who will be bringing a message of help, hope and grace. They work under extreme conditions, they work through the night, and it does not let up all week. We are sending one team to the Gold Coast and another to Great Keppel Island. Blue Cards & Working with Chiildren

RCRC is a safe place for children and young people.

If you are involved in any ministry, program or roster where you are working or serving with young people or children you must have a current Blue Card. Some examples of activities that require a Blue Card are

• Working with HSM (High School) ministries
• Leading a young person's small group (where one or more of those in attendance are under 18 years of age)
• Serving on the crèche roster
• Helping with MOPS
• Leading Kids@Church or Kids@Nite
• Assisting with GEMS
• Attending a young person's camp as an assistant, cook or leader

We already have a large number of people with Blue Cards at RCRC.

If your card is out of date, please renew it immediately. A renewal form is avaliable from the Admin Office.

If you do not have a Blue Card, and you need one, please fill out the attached application (volunteer.pdf).

Please hand your completed form, along with the necessary identification, to Ingeborg, Lisa, Dave or Clinton. We will then process the forms for you. There is no charge for Blue Card Applications for volunteer workers.

Internships ...on hold

At our Elders meeting this week we came to the prayerful conclusion that given Clinton's health and the extra load being placed in leadership, that we are not in a position to offer Internships at  RCRC during 2008. We are still committed to developing young leaders and assisting where we can with encouragement and general mentoring - so if you have plans or ideas, we'd still love to talk with you. We are hoping to offer internships again in 2009. We trust you understand an uphold us in this decision. And enquiries can be directed to dave@redlandscrc.org.au

Prayer

- Year 12 Graduates  - celebrate with their achievement and the close of their secondary school years. Please remember to pray for schoolies and the chaplains (see above)

- Continue to remember Clinton, Tracy and their family. Give thanks for the "juice Crew" - dedicated people who can juice acres of odd looking grasses in a single morning! Pray for God to intervene and bless Clinton with full recovery. Remember that Clinton and Tracy have families a long way away, who in addition to feeling removed, can also feel helpless as a result of the distance. Give thanks for a supportive and caring church family. And definitely: give thanks for Clinton & Tracy's outstanding attitude of faith, humility and endurance

- In case you didn't know: Christmas is coming. Why not do something different, and invite your neighbours to a BBQ. Show them hospitality and love, and help them see Jesus as the centre of our celebration.\

9am: What is it that gets you up in the morning? To love and care for your family? To serve in the church? To work at your job? Motivation makes all the difference. Wrong motives will lead us to wrong results, or simply to give up. But the right motives will carry us through the temptations of self centeredness and apathy. As we look at 2 Corinthians 4 we will see what drove Paul, in ministry, in life, and what is the only motivation that can drive the life of those who belong to Jesus.

5pm: New Life, New Attitudes: last week we were thinking about heaven... This week we're asking about how our ultimate hope in heaven is applied in this life. If heaven is our hope - why worry too much about the here and now? That was a question that never seemed to enter Paul's mind. Quite the contrary: his hope for heaven become his energy for earth. The way he tied these two realms together is remarkable. Read ahead at Col 3:12-14

We will also be celebrating the Lords Supper together...

- For all the Ministry areas of the church, that as the year comes to a close, new leaders and helpers will make themselves available for the coming year.

- The coming election, that God may be glorified in the decisions made.

9am: So we know Jesus Christ did miracles, and that these were designed more than anything to instil faith in people. We also know they are not common, and that God teaches us about his power and grace in weakness. Last Sunday Clinton so powerfully reminded us that trials happen so we might rely on God, and not on ourselves. This Sunday morning we'll be drawing all this to a close with the glorious vision of our ultimate hope, and the ultimate question that hope poses to all of us. You can read ahead by looking up Rev 21-22.

5pm: We often fall into the trap of thinking that God is at work when we feel good. "If I'm pumped up and on fire for God he must be working overtime!" And when we feel down and depressed God must be taking a break.
However, we can see in the Psalms that God is always at work, when he feels present and when he feels absent. We don't praise God just when we're excited and on an emotional high. We praise God all the time, when we feel good and bad, when we're jumping for joy and when we're weeping from grief. We praise him when we're singing to him and when we're complaining to him.
God should always be the first port of call in our lives. Read Psalm 13.

9am: Give us today our daily bread. In our country, with plenty of food, as well as plenty of people who have a weight problem, what do we do with the fourth petition of the Lord's Prayer: Give us today our daily bread.
In this prayer for bread we give EVERY aspect of our earthly life to our heavenly Father. He is the ONLY source of everything good. Without His blessing everything will fail.
So the big word is: TRUST! God's people pray: Help us, Father, to put our trust in you alone.

5pm: Why does bad stuff happen, even to supposedly good people? It's a question we all wrestle with from time to time. It even seems that Christians get to experience more suffering than those who don't know Jesus yet. In 2 Corinthians 1 Paul gives us a little look into his own struggles, and the reasons why God has put him, and communities, through these times. And we see that in it all, God's loving, fatherly hand is at work in bringing us closer and closer to himself.

Prayer

- Pray for those who are sick: Clinton's needs are always before us: continue to be diligent in prayer. Please remember others who struggle is different, but very intense, like Suzy Barham. Remember those who are struggling with the challenges of age.

- This week Maya Diamant has had some tests, and we pray for the Lord's grace and strength in these times of uncertainty. Shelley Barker has had a major operation to her shoulder requiring several weeks off work;

- Chris van Schyndel is speaking with medical people about his shoulder (damaged in a car accident a few weeks ago), please pray that the interventions will be successful

- Daniel Van Dyk celebrates his birthday tomorrow: if you haven't don so, why not send him a card? PO Box 482 Ashmore City 4214. Support him as he seeks to change his life, with God's help, in this rehabilitation program.

- Rob McWilliams is freezing in the UK, but seeking to benefit from the wisdom of Church Planters. This week he is at a conference in Sheffield.

- We have an election coming: pray for wisdom and for the Lord to work through the citizens of this country that we may have a Government of integrity, justice and wisdom.

House Sitting/ Granny Flat

Hello Family in Christ:
 
We are Lance and Ruth Bishop.  We have been missionaries in New Zealand, and have just returned to Australia.  We have applied for permanent residency for Ruth, as she is from America, and have been told the wait for the permanent residency could be up to one year.  We had hopes of returning right back to New Zealand, where we live and work at Lakes Ranch Christian Camp.  There we have been very involved in sharing the Message of Jesus Christ, encouraging kids in their walk with the Lord, discipling, working hard at keeping the camp in order, as well as all of the outdoor activities that our camp provides!  We have also been involved in the planting of Calvary Chapel Chruch, in Rotorua, where Lance is the sound man and very active with men's discipleship, youth, and evangelism.  Ruth is the worship leader each Sunday, very active with the women's ministry, Sunday School, and youth.
 
Now that we are in Queensland, we have started our own Landscaping Business, while waiting for the permanent residency.  God works in amazing ways and we put our full trust in Him as we continue to go where the Lord directs.  We look forward to our return to New Zealand, but until then, we need a place to live.  We are happy to house sit for any who are travelling, or rent a furnished granny flat, or if anyone has any other ideas/options, we are happy to know about it.

Israel/Jordan study tour Sept/Oct. 2008

Israel/Jordan study tour Sept/Oct. 2008

Earlier this year a number of people in the Redlands CRC expressed interest in a trip to Israel. As a result of that we took up contact with the "That the World May Know" ministries in the U.S. Some of you may have seen some of the videos by Ray VanderLaan (from the "Follow the Rabbi" organisation) as he travels through Israel and brings the text of the Scriptures to life in a special way.

We feel it important to carefully select the tour company with which to make such a trip. The tour we hope to make comes not only from a sound biblical perspective, but it also takes seriously the cultural and geographic context of the story of the Bible. It will not just be a "holy site" tour, but the aim is to understand the text of the Scriptures in the context of the land.

At this stage it appears that Rev George DeJong, minister of Holland Heights Christian Reformed Church, will be our tour leader. He has led numerous study tours to Israel, Jordan, and Turkey, and is passionate about sharing and teaching God's Word in the context of Israel and Jordan. As George concluded one of his letters to me some time ago: "You'll never read the Bible the same."

But the tour is not simply hopping on and off the tour bus. There will definitely be some walking involved; to quote George again: "While each group tends to set its own pace I would strongly urge all participants to come as physically fit as absolutely possible so that we might see and learn as much as possible."

Saturday Breakfast

We'll be meeting from 7:30 at RCRC to

- discuss and (we trust) adopt the new guidelines for elders terms and tasks. An information paper has been previously circulated. Everyone is welcome and may speak on any issue, although only members may vote on the proposals.

- Get the latest update on the building plans: drawings will be available. These will be released for wide comment and consultation. A decision will be made at a future meeting.

- Eddie Bos will give us an update on the financial picture. The AGM of the Redlands CRC will be held next month

9am & 5pm: Healing & Mystery. Who has not struggled with the reality of suffering? Whether it's suffering in our personal lives or in our world, it's dark presence can be terrifying and mysterious. There are some things we simply cannot understand. Even so, God allows us to see something of his character and power even in these times. Even then he may bless us with incredible endurance. The Bible tells us that some whom the Lord used most powerfully had some of the deepest challenges to life and faith. Read ahead at 2 Cor 12:1-10.

Clinton back on deck...

We give thanks for Clinton being back on deck this week. While not on full duties, Clinton hopes to preach every second week, the first of these being PM Church on Oct 28. Clinton also hopes to be in the office for at least a few hours each day (Mon-Thurs). We continue to uphold Clinton, Tracy and the children as Clinton undertakes the rigorous treatment. They remain very thankful for the wonderful support and encouragement they are receiving: it's another way of making God's grace and goodness clear. Tracy's mother, Tania Kroon, will arrive on Friday: family is a great gift. Please continue to pray for healing and recovery.

Just in...

Yvonne & Andrew Vos told me this morning that Nicole and Neville Quak (Nicole is their daughter) received a new baby son" Lachlan James and 7:44am this morning! Thank God for this glorious gift of life!

In our prayers...

-  Bronwyn Midgley (known to many here as Bronwyn Robertson) died suddenly last Sunday. This is a huge shock for husband Lawry and for Stuart, Heath, Brooke and Todd. Please pray for the comfort of Jesus to surround them. The funeral will be held on Monday at the Anglican Church in Graceville - please check the newspaper to confirm the details

- Suzy Barham has been in hospital for many weeks now under the care of a mental health team in Belmont. Please continue to pray for David and the children as they cope with this ongoing situation. Continue to ask for strength for the family and healing and recovery for Suzy

- Rod McWilliams travels to the UK this week to attend a church planting conference and meet with other churches engaged in urban and suburban mission. Please pray for Rod, asking that he may pick up learning and resources which will work for our mission here in Redlands

- Continue to ask for wisdom as we come toward the election of Nov 24. Read Rom 13:1-7; Titus 3:1-8

No it's not the Hemelaar's dogs, but a couple whom we have met through backyard mission. She is now too sick to look after her dog, and is giving it away free. It's a 8 year old pedigree Husky. Red and white male, with a beautiful nature. The dog's name is Ky.

News from Clinton & Tracy...

Hi everyone

We thought we would take a bit to time to let you know how things are going for us at the moment.

The last few weeks have been a pretty trying time, but also with a number of highlights. We have had visits from Tracy's parents (Bart and Tania) and Clinton' parents (Hans and Colleen) and brother and sister in law (Jared and Candis). It has been great to catch up with family again, even if the circumstances have not been all that desirable.

We have just returned from a week on the Sunshine Coast with just the 5 of us. It was great to get away, and get a bit of space after a few weeks with others staying in the house. It was nice to chill out on the beach, spend some time with the kids and live as ‘normal' as possible in the current circumstances.

On Friday just gone (12^th) we had our appointment with the oncologist, following his trip to Europe. Obviously that conference did not come up with anything new, and so the status quo remains. We were asked what we wanted to do next (chemotherapy or not) and when we said ‘nothing' he was quite happy with that.

I continue on the ‘alternative' therapy. It has been over 3 weeks now. The diet is very strict, I drink 2-3 liters of freshly squeezed vegetable juice a day, swallow a number of other nasties, and have a couple of other aspects to the therapy (which are not fit for general email). We have just received a government approval for a further element to the treatment which we hope to start as soon as possible.

I generally feel quite well, if a little tired at times, especially in the afternoons. Friday afternoon I was completely written off for a number of hours, but that is also supposed to be a result of the therapy.

It is fair to say that this whole time is a real test / stretch of faith. There are times where we feel ‘safe' knowing that we are in God's hands, and other times when He seems to have lost control, and we are on our own. But our hope rests in the fact that God is not beholden to the way we feel, but is faithful no matter what.

At the moment we don't plan too far ahead at any one time. At this point, I am planning to restart ‘work' in Redlands in the coming week, as much as energy and time (the treatment takes up a fair bit) allow. Tracy's Mum Tania returns at the end of the coming week to help us out for a little while.

We want to say a huge thank you to all those who have encouraged us, prayed for us, sent us cards, emails, and txts. Thanks to all those who have helped practically in whatever way they can, it is much appreciated. We regularly thank God for all of you. The level of support has been amazing.

If so, then we need you for this year's Christmas Choir! Last year was lots of fun and rehearsals are beginning again soon for this year's choir. This is the choir that will be singing at the church Christmas Carols Celebration on the 16th of December.

You don't need to be a world-class opera singer or even a trained singer. We are just looking for people who love to sing and want to be part of this year's Christmas choir. If you can talk, then you can sing!

Dave continues the series on healing: this week "Healing & Faith". This is possibly the biggest question after the question ‘why': what's the connection between faith and healing? Ask 20 people and you can easily get more than 20 answers on that one. So we'll be looking at a few key passages in the NT and listening to what God has to say to us. You may want to look at Matt 17: 14-21.

This term we will investigate what the Bible says about the Holy Spirit and His presence and power in our lives. We'll explore the Pentecost event, the love and nearness of the Holy Spirit to each of us, the wonder of the Trinity and how the Spirit was involved in creation and heaps more.
Children will join in the church service for the first part of the service for the entire term.

We have another opportunity to meet together on Saturday week. These are important times for the church community to focus on a few things together. This particular Saturday breakfast we'll be discussing

• The new RCRC Elders Terms & Tasks. The main changes here are a slight amendment to the way elders are elected and nominated, and changed terms of service. These are fully outlined in the document attached to your email. This document has already been available for the last five weeks or so from the Information booth. Everyone will also receive one on Sunday in their newsletter. Dave will give us a full run-down on the document at the meeting
• These changes are presented by the Eldership for adoption by the congregation. A vote of the members will be taken at the meeting
• Building and facilities update. We will receive the latest version of the plans. These are being presented to the congregation for comment, and we will come together again before the year is out for final approval. The building Committee is very interested in your feedback: please send it through to Hemelaar@royalfoods.com.au or call Frank on 0146 000 500
• Financial overview: Eddie Bos will bring us up to date with the overall financial picture. Audited statements will be presented to the congregation at our forthcoming AGM meeting (date to be confirmed)

NEED for RE Teachers 2008

God has given us incredible opportunities in Australia to get His saving message into the minds of children, as we teach them in Religious Education lessons in the public schools.  It may only be  a question of time (if we follow the American trends) that this will no longer be permitted.
 
Unfortunately however, there are classes in schools in our local area that are totally missing out on hearing the message simply because we can't fill the classes with Christian volunteers. You don't need teaching experience, but an obedient heart to tell children the only message that will save them. My RE teachers range in age from 18 to 70. Some even work full-time and have chosen to taken a couple of hours out of their work schedule to take a couple of classes. I am looking for men and women who will commit to taking up this worthwhile role.
 
I am seeking one RE teacher for Ormiston Primary for next year. ( just  1 hour a fortnight)- on a Tuesday or any other day. There are several RE teachers required in other local schools.

• Clinton, Tracy and the kids have been holidaying in Noosa, and will be there until Saturday. They have been doing all the juicing etc. while there, and despite the extra burden this imposes, they have been having a great time together. Clinton has an appointment with his oncologist on Friday. Please continue to remember Clinton before the Lord
• Burma continues to experience unrest, despite the situation moving from the front pages of the papers. Please pray for Bella, Israel and Christobel, along with all the children at New Life. Pray for peace in the country, for a just and responsible government, and for the good news of Jesus to be received and believed by people.
• Remember our chaplains: Carlee Spiers at Victoria Point High School, Rebecca Cooper at Wellington Point State Primary School. Ormiston State School is seeking a new chaplain as Peter Gavel has finished his term there. There is also a great need for RE teachers at Ormiston
