Hi Church

A reminder that next Wednesday we are beginning our 3 week MINISTRY CONNECTION course.

This is an opportunity to learn about the gifts God has given the church through us, the passions he has placed within us, the skills we have acquired, and how we can put these to best use in the kingdom of God.

This weekend is the last chance to register. You can do so by either emailing clinton@redlandscrc.org.au , or by signing up at the Welcome Desk after both the AM and PM services tomorrow.

Cost is $12 to cover materials and resources.

On a mission with God

Posted 26 August 2007, 7:14 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

Tonight at RCRC we talked about bringing God's mission to expression. We talked about doing this not only with the good news of who Jesus is and what He has done, but also in bringing God's Kingdom to expression in life.

Dave mentioned a few tools to use in sharing the Gospel:

"Two ways to Live"

This helpful tract can be purchased at most Christian Bookstores.

You can also view "Two Ways to Live" (and purchase it) at

http://www.matthiasmedia.com.au/2wtl/

"The Bridge"

A helpful illustration of the Gospel can be downloaded at

http://www.intervarsity.org/evangelism/articles.php?cat=214

Giving the Gospel Hands and Feet...

Finally, the questions we can ask as a guide to bringing the Kingdom of God to expression in various life contexts are:

  1. How do I see the world in rebellion against God around me (home, work)
  2. How would God want things to be instead?
  3. Ask God to guide you through the Word
  4. Ask God to empower you to do it through his Spirit
  5. Start living it
  6. Do this with others (e.g. church community, family, friends, work acquaintances) until Jesus returns to reunite heaven and earth

SUNDAY

9am: So what's with all the names? If all Scripture is God breathed, why do we have passages like Rom 16? Should we take notice of them? What - if anything - can they teach us about being church in 2007? Whether you are one of those people who wonder whether the changes we have seen over recent years at Redlands are for the best, or whether you're wondering whether there's a place for you to serve, this will be an especially important Sunday for you to join us.

5pm: How do we define greatness? How do we identify great leaders? How do we identify great churches? When we read the literature (Christian and other) on the issue, we see a myriad of ideas, goals and suggestions. But Jesus himself has a lot to say, and some of it is extremely challenging. Because in the kingdom economy, greatness is not defined by how many serve us, but on how many we serve. Read ahead in Matthew 20:20-28

Sunday

9am: What do you focus on, the journey, or the destination?

As followers of Jesus we know that we have so much in store for us when Jesus comes again. Its going to be great, more than we can every imagine, and it will make the things of this life seem pale. But that doesn't mean we put our heads down and duck for cover until that day.

As Jesus walks along the road in Luke 9, 3 potential disciples are ‘tested' for their suitability. And as we see Jesus' response to them, we see that there is something important in the journey - Jesus is not just inviting people to wait for heaven, he is inviting disciples.

5pm: Sometimes when we read that Bible, and we are honest about what we are reading, that only conclusion that we can come up with is "That's simply not possible."

Luke 17:1-10 is one of those passages. Its demands are too big, its expectations are too huge for me. But maybe that's the point. Maybe the point is that what is impossible with me, actually is possible with God. What I can not do, God is doing, as he grows me to make me more like Jesus.

Ministry Connection

Aligning your passions, gifts, and resources to the mission of God.  Wednesdays nights 5th, 12th, 26th September at the church 7:30pm - 9:30pm. See attachment for more details.

This Sunday

9 am: Our goal is to have more and more people become followers of Jesus Christ, and to do that we all need a very clear understanding of the sort of community he wants us to build.

What we find in the Bible is that Jesus builds a transformational community which had an unmistakable impact on the world around them and beyond. What a blessing that we get to share that mission in our part of the world today!

11am: RCRC Community - Welcoming Luncheon. If you are new to RCRC then you are invited to a Welcome to the RCRC Family Luncheon.

This will be a time of getting to know one another, meeting the Pastors Dave and Clinton and the RCRC Elders - a time of fellowship and food and a brief overview of the church, its ministries and missions.

Please RSVP Sherri:  0415 835 533 or e-mail  communitylife@redlandscrc.org.au

5pm: Profession of Faith Service

This Sunday, in our 5pm service, a number of our people are going to be doing there profession of faith. These people are: Dylan Greeff, Jo Kippen, Tracy Montgomery, Matt Kippen, Rob Ferguson, Lachlan Black, Lily Sikkema, Sarah Bos, Ben Rowan and Ryan Salisbury.

This is basically their statement that they believe that Jesus Christ is their Lord and Savior, and that they are followers of Him.

Also at this time, Dylan, Rob, Ben and Ryan will be baptized as a symbol of Christ's work in bringing them new life.

It's a great day for them, their families and for us as a church. It will also be a great opportunity for you, your children and your friends to hear of God's work in their lives through Jesus.

To help us celebrate this occasion, we are encouraging everyone to bring a plate of food to share at the end of the service, and then hang around to meet these guys, and others.

  • You will enjoy a great meal
  • You might meet some new people

We'd love to share this time with you and your family!

All you have to do is let us know you're coming! You can respond to this message or email Sherri Greeff, our Community Life Coordinator (lsgreeff@bigpond.net.au 0415 835 533)

And free bread, too

A kind person has been dropping ‘end of day' bread at RCRC on Sunday evenings. It may be good for us to take home a few rolls, but the intention is that this bread goes to people and organisations in need.

If you know of an organisation that could use a few boxes of bread each Sunday night, please let Dave know (dave@redlandscrc.org.au)

Sunday

9am:  Ever wondered why you ended up here? Why you have relative financial stability compared with 95% of the world population? Why you have the educational opportunities of this great country? Why you have money in the bank? Or why the bank allows you to have a credit card? Some will reason that all these things are God's blessing of prosperity, a response to who we are and our desire to live before him. Is that the reason for our prosperity? Questions like these do not only address issues of justice, but also the heart of God and how he works in people. As we look at Luke 16:1-15, Jesus words have a few surprises for us...

5pm: When Jesus offers himself to us as the ‘living water' he is tapping into (mind the pun) an imagery that is used throughout the Bible of a river of life. God's plan is not just to quench the thirst of individuals, but the whole world. This Sunday night we are going to see what it means to not only be the recipients of water, but to be a part of the river of God, and his plan to quench His world. Read ahead in Ezekiel 47:1-12

Update re: Carlee Spiers

Carlee is still in the PA Hospital. The infection in her eye was very serious, and recovery will be a long haul. It may be 12 months before the final situation is clear. At present Carlee only has 10% vision in the affected eye. This means she will not be able to drive for at least 3 months. Depending on the final state of her recovery, a corneal transplant may be required.

Please pray for Carlee and her family. They are very grateful for the support and care of church families at RCRC, Cleveland Baptist, and Victoria Point Baptist. Please also pray for Dr Peter Beckingsale, the Corneal Specialist and others on her medical team

PS. A contact lens solution (AMO brand) has been recalled form the market. If you have this solution at home, please cease use and seek the advice of our pharmacist as to the state of the recall. Church Planting in Redland Bay?

Live or work in Redland Bay?

Interested in planting a church in this growing area?

We are calling together all those who live in Redland Bay, or might be interested in platning a church in this area. A ‘coffee and chat' about the possibilities of this work will be held on Saturday 21st July, 10am-12noon. Please feel free to come along.

If you want to know a little more, talk to Clinton

Sunday

9am:  Why do we roll our eyes when the topic of giving comes up? We are so used to going on a guilt trip about giving that we could even claim  frequent flier points! Consider this: 1) our typical response may say more about us than those who speak to us, and 2) our typical response might show that we really have not understood who God really is and the actions that lie at the centre of his personality. Maybe we just have a lot to learn... So where do we start? Let's look at two of the most well known verses in the Bible: Gen 1:1 and John 3:16. Unless we understand them, we'll never get the idea of giving.

5pm: So what makes Jesus so different? When so many things, religions, people are offering a real thirst quenching, what makes the water that Jesus offers us so radically different and fulfilling. This week we'll examine Jesus' claim to give us ‘living water' and why it stands out as so radically different from anything else. Just one sip, and life will never be the same again.

Preview Screening: "Amazing Grace" - July 27

It appears that there is some confusion about the dates for the screening of Amazing Grace. Maybe that confusion exists mainly between my ears... the date for the Screening has been confirmed and it is Friday July 27. (NOT this week).

The time for the screening is still to be confirmed. We will know more about that by the end of the week.

This may change the number of people who would like to attend, so we will send the clipboard around once again coming Sunday. Sorry about that.

If you're not going to be at RCRC on Sunday and would like to come, please send an email to dave@redlandscrc.org.au and I'll put you on the list.

Apologies for the confusion...

RCRC Community - Welcoming Luncheon.

If you are new to RCRC then you are invited to a Welcome to the RCRC Family Luncheon.

When5th August 2007

Time:  11am (straight after the morning church service)

This will be a time of getting to know one another, meeting the Pastors Dave and Clinton and the RCRC Elders - a time of fellowship and food and a brief overview of the church, its ministries and missions.

Please RSVP Sherri:  0415 835 533 or e-mail  communitylife@redlandscrc.org.au

We look forward to seeing you there.

"Lets start making a difference together"

In your prayers...

- Please remember John and Ineke Crawford and their family. John's mother died on Sunday, slipping peacefully into the presence of Jesus. Mrs Crawford was 86 years old, and she loved Jesus. While we recognise the comfort of the Gospel and the hope of the resurrection, those who follow Jesus also keenly feel the pain of separation - so please remember to walk the road of grief with those who feel the loss.

Please pray that the damage will be minimal, and that she will recover quickly.

Possessed by Possessions?

Posted 14 July 2007, 9:09 AM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

...following on from Dave's message on Sunday July 8...

In Acts 2 & 4 we have see Holy Spirit move in God's people in a very special way. Even though it was hard for people to own land, we see Jesus followers giving away land and possessions (see Acts 4:32-37). This was not just a matter of them giving away something they didn't need. They were making a statement: "we are not going to let these things rule our lives. In the way we use possessions we want to show that Jesus' Kingdom has come."

We all know how dominant our possessions can become in our lives, and sometimes - like the rich young man (Matt 19:16-22) - they can keep us from following Jesus. They can blind us to the plight of the suffering. They can stifle our witness.

Last week we heard that following Jesus is about being a community of restoration. And we were asked to consider:

  • Which story are your possessions telling?
  • Do they tell the story that Jesus' Kingdom has come?
  • Are your possessions obscuring Jesus' rule and influence in your life?

It's true. Sometimes the things we have, or the things we strive for, suck life out of us. They can steal our joy. They can consume us. They can quench the work of the Spirit in us. They can make it near impossible for Jesus' restoration to be seen in us. When that happens, we're possessed by possessions, and Christ's ownership in us cannot be seen (see 1 Cor 6:19-20).

So this week and next we have an opportunity to show that we want to follow Jesus, and we want to throw off the domination of possessions. It does not mean we're all called to give everything away. We are called, however, to repent and make a fresh start.

Over this weekend and next I encourage you to prayerfully consider whether possessions have too much control of your life. If they do, God is calling you to do something about it. Here's a suggestion bring along:

  • Those possessions that have dominated you. This can be anything: Brand names? Technology? Bring it to RCRC. Make the break, and leave it in the designated box in the Hall
  • A symbol of the things that have dominated your life, and which you now want to break with (e.g. Travel junkie? Bring a brochure/whatever to symbolise your commitment; stock market - bring the prospectus; Internet? Bring software, PC, whatever)

Please understand:

We're not asking for junk

  • This is not about what you can afford to give away, it's about what you can't afford to keep. It's been ruling your life, and that place belongs to Jesus.
  • This is not a demand: it's an opportunity to express your desire to follow Jesus in gratitude for the life you have received in him
  • Things of worth will be sold and all monies used for poverty relief

Great news from Clinton & Tracy

Dear church

Today Tracy and I returned to the oncologist to receive test results from my latest round of tests. We are very happy to report that the initial concerns were probably related to tonsillitis and not to the return of melanoma.

We are extremely thankful to God for this answer to prayer, and also to you for your support, concern and prayers during this time. Its great to be a part of this family.

I will continue to have 3 monthly scans and check ups over the next 2 years.

Clinton, Tracy and boys.

Sunday

9am: Are we really alive? What does it mean to be alive? Who decides if we're truly alive or not?
So often we gauge our 'liveliness' by our reputation, by what the people around us think. We keep active as individuals or as a church group so everyone can see how much good stuff we're doing. But it doesn't matter what everyone else thinks. It matters what Jesus thinks. In Revelation chapters 2 & 3 Jesus tells seven churches what he thinks about them. On Sunday morning we'll look at just one of those to see what we can learn about being 'alive'! Read Revelation 3:1-6.

5pm: Almost every day we read or hear something about the drought that is gripping our nation, our state and our city. We are constantly being told that we are in the biggest dry spell in our history, and things may not get better for a while. But for an even longer time, we, our city, our country, and the world, has been suffering a drought of a different kind, a drought that sees us longing and thirsty and dying for meaning, purpose, significance, and eternity. This Sunday evening, in the first of our THIRST series, we are going to explore why we are so thirsty, and where the answer to this drought lies.
