We say we are here to 'glorify God', and in all things, but what does it really mean? Why should this word hold pride of place in what we are called to do and to be? The truth is, when we understand this, we get church in its right perspective, and we start to answer the question people have asked since the beginning: what am I really here for?: Col 3:1-17

The adoption metaphor used in the Bible does not often get a mention in contemporary Christianity, but it is actually an important facet of salvation. The Apostle Paul in Galatians 4:1-7 speaks about the position we were in prior to conversion, and what position we possess now. But what does this mean to us today? Find out by coming this Sunday evening at 5pm as Ryan Hemelaar brings the message to us.

During his life the apostle Paul had to deal with a sizeable amount of suffering. Prison, floggings, shipwrecked, hunger, and much more.

There's a long list in 2 Corinthians 11 and 12. But he made an amazing discovery: out of all these negative events, something very positive emerged! And that was the fact that it was exactly in his weakness that Paul experienced the strength of faith in Christ.

How does that work? How can we - with all the negative things that come our way - experience the same joy and contentment, in 2010?

Do you find strength in your weakness? Through Christ?

But what, there's more!!! Just when you thought "Why Church?" was over, here comes one more message to round the series off. Having looked at what the church is, and why it exists, and how we engage with God's church, this week we are going to explore what are the essential ingredients to church life. In a world where every church seems to offer their flavour, we want to ask of scripture, what God considers to be the essential elements, and by so doing, strive for them with everything we are.

You... The Mentor

Posted 30 June 2010, 9:21 AM by Margaret Nugent. Permalink

We have all heard the phrase that we are about nurturing people to maturity here at Redlands CRC. With that in mind, it would be great to start some intentional mentoring relationships get under way. This does not need to be too complicated: simply some ongoing relationships where someone can walk with another in life and what it means to follow Jesus. This would be a great way to bridge some generational divides, and to bring people together who ordinarily may not connect that often.

Why raise this now? In recent months a few people have said that they would love to have a mentor. It would be great if we could provide some!

You may wonder whether you've got what it takes: whether you know enough. Really, 'knowing the answers' is not as important as 'asking the right questions' and 'being a great listener' - and we may be able to help with that. It would involve partnering with someone of the same gender, meeting every couple of weeks (whatever works best), working through a basic plan, and some prayer together.

So here's the deal: if you're interested in exploring mentoring, there is a sign up sheet in the foyer of the church, also, please let me know. And if you're interested in being mentored, let me know. We'll provide some orientation, ongoing support, and resourcing for mentors. We'll also stay in touch with those mentored to ensure it's all working well. It could open up some wonderful contexts of grace and growth! Even if you're unsure, please let me know, and we can talk about it.

We were so encouraged by the great roll up last time, and we'd love to see a strong roll up for this one as well. Please mark your diaries!

SCHOOL CHAPLAINCY

Posted 30 June 2010, 9:17 AM by Margaret Nugent. Permalink

We are all well aware of the awesome value of the school chaplaincy program.   It underwent a very rapid growth thanks to Federal Government  funding.   In the last budget, chaplaincy got another one year's worth of funding, but nothing in the forward estimates.

The recent changes in leadership of the Labour Party mean that, if Labour is re-elected,  it will be very unlikely that the federal funding for the chaplaincy program will continue. It is important that we lobby our candidates now,  to get them to get their party to commit to continue funding chaplaincy in our schools.

Sunday AM

Leaders we can respect: our tendency to distrust leaders and people in authority is legendary. What would change if we viewed authority and leadership differently? Or if leaders led differently? We may be surprised to find out that the model of leadership developed in the New Testament is both attractive and world changing. No wonder: it is modelled on Jesus himself. That's what Peter says about leadership, and then there's what he says about 'follower-ship', and that's just as alluring. Read ahead at 1 Pet 5:1-7

Over the last two weeks, in looking at "The Church" we have seen that the church is very important to us, to God and to the world. But the question that remains then is "So What?" What does this mean for us? As we unpack Ephesians 4 we will see that God wants all believers to then adopt that attitude and lifestyle of servants, where we protect the unity of the church by putting others forward, and use our God given gifts for the upbuilding of the church.

Clear Thinking Christians

Posted 22 June 2010, 4:33 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

Dave mentioned a few resources last Sunday to help us think clearly about matters of culture, and to develop discernment about the times we live in. Here they are:

Websites:

Mars Hill Seattle (Mark Driscoll) www.marshillchurch.org

Mars Hill Grand Rapids (Rob Bell) www.marshill.org

Tim Keller; Redeemer Prebyterian Church www.redeemer.com

(While the first two churches have a similar name, they are not related. The podcasts from these churches are particularly insightful, helpful and easy on the ear. You can find them through a iTune podcast search, or by accessing each church's download via your mp3 player)

Books:

Colson: The Faith (Why Christians believe, what they believe, and why it matters)

Keller: The Prodigal God (brilliant explanation of God's grace, best I have ever read)

Bell: Jesus Wants To Save Christians (how God seeks to work in his world through his people)

Mark Sayers: The Vertical Self (What does 'identity' mean for a follower of Jesus - powerful critique, great wisdom for life. Australian author)

Answered Prayer! Boundary Road: SOLD!

Posted 22 June 2010, 11:58 AM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

For some time now we have been praying that God would open the way for our Boundary Road property to be sold. We're very thankful to report that over the weekend Church Council has received and accepted a contract to sell 103 Boundary Rd, Thornlands, for $770,000. We have a small repair to complete on the property, but otherwise this sale will be unconditional. Settlement will be take place in approximately four weeks. The normal process has now be set in motion through the respective solicitors.

We're so thankful for the ongoing your ongoing prayers, and for the Lord who has answered them. Please continue to uphold those who oversee our properties, and their ongoing commitment to reduce our debt.

Rudd & Abbott (on screen) at RCRC tomorrow night

Posted 20 June 2010, 7:03 PM by David Groenenboom. Permalink

Make it Count (2010)

Tomorrow (Monday) night we have a unique opportunity to hear the Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd and the Leader of the Opposition, Mr Tony Abbott, address issues of specific interest to Christian and Churches. This is a webcast event, direct from Old Parliament House in Canberra.

With a Federal Election coming before the end of the year, we are already being overrun with political advertising and opinion. The range and complexity of the issues can be confusing and overwhelming.

At Redlands CRC we have a policy of not supporting one party over another. Even so, we encourage people to be fully informed of the issues, and to vote as responsible followers of Jesus.

With this in mind, Redlands CRC Church Council has agreed to host the 'Make It Count 2010' webcast at our premises.

Both Mr Rudd and Mr Abbott will specifically address matters relevant to the Christian church. Both leaders will have questions posed to them from Australian Church Leaders.

The event will not be seen on and TV networks (whether paid or free to air).

The Church Council of Redlands CRC believes this will be informative and helpful for the church family as they prepare for the election.

We encourage people to invite friends, family, and other interested people to this special event.

When: Monday, June 21, 2010, 7:00 (sharp!) to 9:30pm

Where: Redlands CRC, Main Auditorium

Program:

7:00pm                        Opening

7:20pm                        Address by Mr Rudd

Last week (week 1 of "Why Church?")we saw that the church is extremely important for the life of the follower of Jesus. It's where we find identity, belonging and purpose in Christ. This week we will look at Ephesians 3, and see that it's not only important for Christians, it's vital for God's plan for the world.

It seems that one of the most challenging struggles in being a follower of Jesus is to move away from seeing him as a mere sector in life, like icing on a cake, or whether his rule in our lives is integral to our very personality and being. Peter makes one thing very clear: when a person comes into relationship with Jesus, they commit themselves to a total way of life. They become different people. Read ahead: 1 Peter 4:1-11

GLOBAL MARKET DAY (is back)

Posted 17 June 2010, 9:06 AM by Margaret Nugent. Permalink

GLOBAL MARKET DAY (is back)

Saturday 11 Sept; 11am-3pm

Global Market Day is a unique initiative in our local area. On this day we partner with organisations, businesses, community groups and people who are passionate about the poor. GMD is about creating an opportunity for people to buy goods and support projects that empower developing countries overseas. Our stall holders either buy from or support such communities and use ethical and sustainable practices. In addition we want to increase awareness around how we can do more than simply give our money, but also use our voice to demand that manufacturers, retailers and governments to work for a more just world. The church does not benefit financially from this event. Rather it is run as an expression of our experience of God's love and commitment to serve others. Please join with us to make this a fabulous day. See Miranda, Suzi, Graham, Janette, Steve S, or Geoff H. Call 0432 579 044 for more info.

We're thanking God this week for the safe arrival of two little people: Sophia Dominique Crawford, a little daughter for Andrew and Belinda on Monday; and Devi Shey Berends, a son for Clinton & Tracy, born Tuesday. We're reminded in all this that it's God who gives life and all we need. Let's continue to pray for the mums as they regain strength, and a safe homecoming.
