Here's 2.3 million talents...

Stepping forward together

Last night a well attended meeting of the Redlands Christian Reformed Church decided overwhelmingly to step into a new chapter. Voting was very strong, with all motions being passed in excess of a 90% majority.

Opening the meeting, Dave Groenenboom outlined the extraordinary events that had seen land open up adjacent to the current church property. This presented the congregation with an extraordinary challenge: to own the mission and vision of the church – to turn the city of Redlands into a community of hope. Pastor David suggested that with so many very gifted people, and with the land opening up the way it had, that God may be calling Redlands CRC to a position of leadership and great responsibility. In the manner of the parable of the talents, we have had put what we currently have to work, and God has now blessed us with more. Now we have, not ten talents, but 2.3 million of them.

Frank Hemelaar outlined how the various prices were calculated and how they could be regarded as realistic. He also outlined various possible options for use of the properties at a later date.

Eddie Bos gave a thorough breakdown of financing issues, developing various scenarios for how our responsibilities might be addressed. He also examined the pros and cons of whether Boundary Rd should be sold or retained.

The discussions were undertaken in a great spirit, and there was no doubt that the congregation has taken this step together, not only positively, but in the clear understanding of their responsibilities and their dependence on the Lord.

Following well rounded discussion, the meeting decided to

  • Purchase the property at 84 Sturgeon St ($700,000)
  • Purchase the property at 88 Sturgeon St ($375,000)
  • Purchase the property at 90 Sturgeon St ($1,300,00)
  • Retain the land at Boundary Rd, Thornlands – to be sold later

The intent of the meeting was in retaining Boundary Rd was to use eventual resale value to effectively reduce debt

The challenge before us all

Our call is to use this wonderful opportunity responsibly and courageously, humbly trusting the Lord to continue his blessing. This requires an extraordinary step of faith where we

  • Deepen our commitment to Christ as our Master and Leader
  • Deepen our individual commitment to ministry and mission: there is much to be done, and many more who need to know Jesus
  • Deepen our individual commitment to the body of Christ: we need a growing, supportive and united body of members to move confidently into the future God has for us. If you are not yet a member, and would like to discuss this, please contact Pastor Dave (dave@redlandscrc.org.au)
  • Deepen our financial commitment as individuals and families. There is a great need to reduce our need for bank finance, and instead to raise capital through courageous, sacrificial and thankful giving and pledges over the next years. Pledge forms were distributed at the meeting, and will be distributed around the congregation. Please prayerfully make a generous commitment to this work, share the load together, and be confident of the Lord’s provision as you do so (Matt 6:33-34).

Clinton’s news…

At the conclusion of the meeting, Pastor Clinton advised us all that he has been diagnosed with a melanoma on his neck. Initial removal indicates that further surgery and tests are required. He will be visiting a specialist this week, with surgery likely next week.

Clinton spoke of the deep appreciation for the care and love he and Tracy have from the Redlands church family, and more so for the faithfulness of God whose love and grace are never uncertain.

Then almost everyone present gathered around Clinton as we prayed for strength, peace, and specifically for healing.

Church council would urge continued and fervent prayer for Clinton, Tracy and the boys. Let us remember that nothing happens outside of our gracious God’s care and presence. We can be confident in his grace for every new day as we follow him. We would also encourage your ongoing support and care for Clinton and Tracy – gracious words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing for the bones Prov 22.24.
